CATCHING UP ON WII RELEASES
January 26 2007 - 11:02 pm (CET) - Posted by Acey NINTENDO WII

We've been a bit (lot) out of date on the Wii releases lately and boy have there been a lot the past week or so.

Well to make up for it we've created a release list instead of posting them all here on the news page. Please note that the number system is taken from gbatemp and we believe there are a few errors.. but don't kill us if we're mistaken though...

Anyway you can check ou the list here

DS-X RECEIVES FIRMWARE UPGRADE TO VERSION 1.1.0
January 26 2007 - 9:28 pm (CET) - Posted by Acey GAMEBOY ADVANCE

THE FOLLOWING WAS TAKEN FROM THE OFFICIAL DS-X WEBSITE

Hello everyone,

By popular demand, we recently feature-froze the OS development, and began preparing for release. While there are still quite a few additional features still in development which we had originally planned for 1.1.0, there had to come a point where we said "This is enough!" and put out what was done for the world to use.

Demand for this update has been high, but we think you'll find it was worth the wait. We've covered some of the most highly demanded feature requests, fixed a few of the most problematic bugs, and implemented some incredibly cool new functionality which opens even more doors towards making the DS-Xtreme the most feature rich and flexible product available on the market.

Probably the most noticeable change is our entirely new look and feel. While we were fond of our original skin, we felt that it was important to take our skinning engine a step further, and provide as much of a sleek, crisp, clean user experience as possible. The old skin isn't gone forever, however... we've kept it available for posterity's sake, and you can find it in the new skin selection options available in settings.

While you're there in settings, you may notice the new "Preset Directories" option available there. This is a feature which has been requested time and again on forums, and we felt we would be remiss in our duties if we hadn't implemented it. Enabling this option will restrict the searching for applications to the "Apps" directory only, the searching of music to the "Music" directory only, and the searching of SkinApps to the "SkinApps" directory. This will make search times substantially faster, further improving your experience with the DS-Xtreme.

Did I hear someone say "What are SkinApps?"

This brings us to my personal favorite new feature in 1.1.0, Skin-Engine Applications, or SkinApps. A SkinApp is a fully self contained application written using our skinning engine's functionality. Our hope is that this will pave the way for a whole series of DS-Xtreme powered homebrew games and applications, scripted in our expanding skinning/media engine. To help foster development in this area, and to give everyone some starting points to work from, we've included 3 sample SkinApps.... a calculator, an expansive sudoku engine (including the first DS-Xtreme on-screen-keyboard!), and a classic staple of gaming - a pong clone!

We still have quite a few things in development, and will be releasing updates at a slightly faster pace from here as we finish each item on the list. Keep those suggestions and ideas coming!

This update brings software version to 1.1.0, and hardware version to 1.0.1.

As this release includes quite a few skinning changes, it is important to add the "public partition" files from http://news.ds-x.com/ to your ds-x drive after the update!

Software Change-log:
+Multiple skin selection/support (Holding B during startup forces system backup skin to be loaded)
+Entirely new skin!

+Scroll-bar widget

-New loading and top screen

-Cosmetic change to App loading transition
-Previous (1.0.x) skin is now available as "OS10"
+ "Preset" directories searching option
+ "SkinApps" Skin engine based applications support

+Sudoku, Pwng, and Calculator examples
* Instant boot MBR handling bug fixed
* Instant boot LED handling bug fixed
* Better eeprom emulation mode detection
* Fixed an issue with graphics engine display quality (line skipping)
* Dpad release events are now properly placed into event queue

Hardware Change-log:
* Resolved QKIN timing issue
- Changed default IO state on CPU bus which should help improve reliability all-around.

+ Addition
* Bug fix
- Change

Peace,
Leto

NEW DS DISNEY GAME TO INCLUDE 'SPECIAL FEATURES'

Disney Unveils Innovative Unique Features For The highly Anticipated Video Game "Spectrobes"

Code Input Cards, Wireless Gameplay and Downloadable Content To Revolutionize Experience on Nintendo DSTM

BURBANK, Calif. – (January 25, 2007) – "Spectrobes," Disney’s eagerly awaited video game for the Nintendo DS, will not only take players on a captivating action-filled intergalactic journey, but will also introduce innovative new gameplay features designed specifically for the platform. Disney today announced that "Spectrobes" will include a unique code input card system, local wireless gameplay, Nintendo Wi-Fi downloadable content and a compatible online community.

For the first time on the Nintendo DS, players will be able to use collectible trading cards to unlock additional content within the game using the touch screen. In addition, players will be able to download content via a Wi-Fi connection; play together locally using a wireless connection; and take advantage of online community features to extend the "Spectrobes" experience beyond the game.

“With all of its innovative features on the Nintendo DS, 'Spectrobes' delivers the type of engaging experience fans of action role-playing games are looking for,” said Craig Relyea, vice president of marketing, Buena Vista Games. “Following in the footsteps of 'Kingdom Hearts,' 'Spectrobes' is another uniquely original game franchise that is rich in story, characters and unique gameplay features.

The game features two junior Planetary Patrol officers named Rallen and Jeena who must save the galaxy by awakening, training and collecting prehistoric creatures called Spectrobes. These creatures hold the key to defeating merciless enemies known as the Krawl. "Spectrobes" fully utilizes aspects of the Nintendo DS, such as its revolutionary touch screen and microphone, through creative gameplay that includes excavating and awakening dormant creatures with the stylus and voice commands.

Included in each "Spectrobes" game is a pack of four translucent lenticular code input cards, perfect for collecting and trading. Once players unlock the special ability in the game, they can fit a code input card over the Nintendo DS touch screen and use the stylus to consecutively tap numerical holes in the cards, unlocking new content, which includes creatures and minerals. Along with inclusion in game packages, additional trading cards will be available after the game’s release.

Once awakened and trained, Spectrobes are powerful creatures that can be used by Rallen to battle against the Krawl or other players and their creatures locally via wireless gameplay. Players can enter a one-on-one battle with a friend or participate in an organized tournament for up to 16 players.

Players can also earn the ability to download content such as videos, creatures, custom parts and minerals through a Wi-Fi connection. Also, once connected to the Internet, the Nintendo DS will generate a personal planetary patrol badge number that can be synchronized to each player’s profile page on the Spectrobes web site. Once connected to their game results, players’ profiles will include information about their Spectrobes creatures, armor and weapons. In addition, a leader board on the web site will track the top scores from several special sequence battles in the game, allowing players to show their success to a global audience.

Developed by Kyoto, Japan-based Jupiter Corporation, "Spectrobes" will be available worldwide on March 13, 2007. "Spectrobes" is rated E for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and will have a suggested retail price of $29.99.

For more information about "Spectrobes," please visit: www.spectrobes.com

January 24 2007 - 11:34 am (CET) - Posted by Acey NINTENDO DS

As mentioned by yours truely in our review of Datel's Cartridge Construction Kit, Datel decided to scrap two of their products, namely the Cartridge Contruction Kit which plays homebrew NDS games/apps and the Max Music which is an MP3 Player cartridge for the Nintendo.

These two products have now merged into one cartridge called "Games 'N Music" and a pressrelease was made available a couple of days ago eventhough the product has been available on www.codejunkies.com for well over a week.

Anyway here's the pressrelease:

Home brew games and music on the move with your DS!

With Games ‘n’ Music, you can put your Nintendo DS or DS Lite at the centre of your digital lifestyle. FAKE NDS GAMES APPEARING
January 23 2007 - 10:41 pm (CET) - Posted by Acey NINTENDO DS

The Gameboy has always been haunted by stacks and stacks of pirate carts with X number of games on one cartridge.

Back in the days it was quite easy to spot a pirate game as they usually were oddly shaped or even were the wrong color, but also the fact that just about every pirate cart was a so-called multicart. Today the majority of pirates games are single games carts though.

With the Gameboy Advance and now Nintendo DS things have now changed a bit for the worse. Today pirates are very close to the original cart design and even die hard gamers sometimes have a hard time telling pirate from original.

Lately NDS games have started to appear in pirate versions and it looks like the guys over at Pocket Gamer stumbled upon one of these game pirates when shopping for a game on ebay.

Click here to read their story as well as a quick guide on how to avoid those damn pirate carts that often breaks or has buggy save support.

SHIN'EN PREPARES NEW GARFIELD GAME FOR THE DS
January 22 2007 - 11:48 am (CET) - Posted by Acey NINTENDO DS

The german company Shin'en, known for games such as Iridion, Nanostray and Maya the Bee, is working on a new Garfield game for the DS. While the previous Garfiled games have been quite bad, Shin'en's game called Garfield's Nightmare looks like a quite promising platform game and eventhough the target group is tweens and younger I might be tempted to give it try aswell :-)

The game will be released by The Game Factory in March 2007

REVIEW: CARTRIDGE CONSTRUCTION KIT
January 21 2007 - 12:41 am (CET) - Posted by Acey NINTENDO DS

I'm not exactly sure why I bothered to buy a new Datel product as I'm not really a fan of their quality control.

Anyway click here to read a small review of the Cartridge Construction Kit, which by the way has been replaced by a new product called "Games 'N Music" - The Cartridge Construction Kit and Max Music in one cartridge....
