Super James Pond II: Codename Robocod (Unreleased)

Please note that this page contains assumptions as well as peoples memories of what happened a long time ago. Therefore it may be incorrect in some areas.

One game that still has not seen the light of day - James Pond II for the NES, later renamed to Super James Pond. Unfortunately the game would go unreleased, maybe because of being too late in the NES' lifespan, however at this point, it is just pure guessing.

As far as I know the game was only ever mentioned in European magazines, which could've meant that it was slated for a release only in Europe. The UK Magazine, N-Force, posted a review of the game in their July 1993 issue and by this time the game had been renamed to Super James Pond. What is a little odd though is that another UK magazine, Game Zone, also had a preview of the game in their August 1993 issue, but with a screenshot of a titlescreen saying "James Pond II: Codename Robocod". It would have had to be the same game though, it would have made no sense to remease two James Pond titles for the NES at nearly the same time.

The game was to be relased by Ocean/Millenium and development of the NES and a Gameboy counterpart was sub contracted to a company called Data Design, or Data Design Interactive. The Gameboy version was also rebranded to Super James Pond and was released for the original Gameboy in 1993. Super James Pond was also released for the Super Nintendo that same year, by American Softworks in the US, by Ocean in Europe and Victor Entertainment in Japan where it was actually named Super James Pond II. The SNES version was not done by Data Design though, but another company called Vectordean.

The NES version however was never heard of again though and as mentioned earlier, and again I am just guessing - the game might just have been too late in the NES' lifespam. But with that said, we do not really know how far development was, even if it was finished and ready to go and meet the supposed release date of September of 1993.

I did manage to track down the guy who made the graphics for the NES version some 20+ years ago, Mark Russel. While he could not really tell me much about the NES version of Super James Pond, he did mention that it was his very first commercial title. The NES version was supposedly programmed by Steve Williams, but I have been unsuccessful at trying to find him, so this has not been verified.

James Pond was quite popular on the Amiga back then and it actually got ported to pretty much everything in existance at the time, even the Sega Master System and the Game Gear received their conversions of James Pond II.

The search feature is still in its alpha stage though.
